The Villages® Golf Cart Lifestyle: What Buyers Should Check Before Choosing a Home

By Brian Williams :: Realtor® (LPT Realty, LLC)

One of the things buyers love most about The Villages® is the golf cart lifestyle.

For many people, it is part of the dream.

Dinner by golf cart.

Golf by golf cart.

Live music by golf cart.

Friends, pools, recreation centers, shopping, and daily errands — all with that relaxed Florida feel.

But here is what buyers need to understand:

Not every home gives you the same golf cart lifestyle.

Just because a home is in The Villages® does not mean the golf cart routine will feel the same.

Before you buy, you need to check how that home actually fits the way you plan to live.

The Big Question

Before choosing a home, ask yourself:

How much will I actually use the golf cart?

Some buyers plan to use it every day.

Some use it mostly for golf.

Some use it for dinner, entertainment, and errands.

Some love the idea of it, but end up driving their car more often.

There is no wrong answer.

But you need to be honest before you choose a location.

A home may look perfect online, but if the golf cart access does not fit your routine, the location may not feel as convenient after you move in.

Check #1: How Far Is the Ride?

Distance matters.

A golf cart ride that sounds fun on paper may feel different in real life.

Ask:

How far is it to the nearest town square?

How far is it to grocery shopping?

How far is it to golf?

How far is it to your favorite restaurants?

How long will the ride feel in summer heat?

How long will the ride feel if rain pops up?

A 10-minute ride and a 35-minute ride are very different lifestyles.

Check #2: Which Town Square Will You Use Most?

Many buyers say they want to be “near the squares.”

But The Villages® has different town square areas, and buyers often develop a favorite.

Before choosing a home, think about:

Where do you see yourself going for live music?

Where do you like to eat?

Where do you want to meet friends?

Which area feels most natural to your lifestyle?

Being close to one town square may be a big advantage.

But only if it is the one you will actually use.

Check #3: Golf Cart Access to Everyday Errands

The golf cart lifestyle is not only about entertainment.

For many residents, it is about daily convenience.

Ask:

Can I get to groceries by golf cart?

Can I get to the pharmacy?

Can I get to restaurants?

Can I get to medical offices?

Can I get to recreation centers?

Can I get to the pool?

If you plan to use the golf cart for everyday life, the home’s location matters more than the photos.

Check #4: Bridge, Tunnel, and Route Comfort

This is something buyers may not think about until they are here.

The route itself matters.

Some buyers are comfortable with longer golf cart routes, bridges, tunnels, busier crossings, and traffic.

Others prefer something simpler and quieter.

Before buying, ask:

Does the route feel easy?

Will I enjoy this ride often?

Does the route feel safe and comfortable to me?

Will I want to do this at night?

Will guests feel comfortable following the route?

A home may be close by distance, but the actual ride still needs to feel right.

Check #5: Golf Cart Parking at Home

Do not forget about storage.

A golf cart lifestyle means you need somewhere to keep the cart.

Before buying, think about:

Is there a golf cart garage?

Is it a two-car garage with room for a cart?

Will the cart block storage?

Can I still park my vehicles?

Is there room for bikes, tools, golf clubs, and holiday decorations?

Is the garage easy to use every day?

Garage space is one of the most overlooked features in The Villages®.

And it can make daily life much easier.

Check #6: Charging and Practical Use

If you plan to have an electric golf cart, charging matters.

Ask:

Where will the cart charge?

Is the garage setup convenient?

Is there enough room around the cart?

Will I need to move vehicles around?

Will the garage get too crowded?

These details seem small until you deal with them every day.

Check #7: Guests and Extra Parking

Many buyers have family and friends visit.

That means you need to think beyond your own car and cart.

Ask:

Where will guests park?

Will the driveway handle visitors?

Is there nearby guest parking?

Will the garage and driveway feel tight?

Will family visits be easy or frustrating?

A home with great golf cart access but poor parking may still create headaches.

Check #8: Lifestyle Fit

The best golf cart location is not the same for every buyer.

Some buyers want to be close to everything.

Some want a quieter area and do not mind a longer ride.

Some want to be near golf.

Some want to be near a specific pool or recreation center.

Some want restaurants and music.

Some want peace and privacy.

So instead of asking:

“Is this a good location?”

Ask:

“Is this a good location for the way I want to live?”

That is the better question.

The Mistake Buyers Make

The mistake is assuming all homes in The Villages® offer the same lifestyle.

They do not.

One home may make daily golf cart living easy.

Another may be better for buyers who plan to drive more.

Another may be perfect for golf.

Another may be better for someone who values quiet and privacy over convenience.

The house matters.

But the routine matters too.

My Advice

Before making an offer, test the golf cart lifestyle.

Drive the route.

Time the ride.

Look at the garage.

Think through errands.

Compare town square access.

Picture a normal week.

Then ask:

“Would I enjoy this lifestyle every day?”

That one question can help you choose the right home.
